I just got back from touring in Japan from Dec., 3-thru-10th. I worked the cities of Chino, Kochi, Kyoto, Kobe,
and Osaka. My long time friend and promoter Dr. Hironobu Oda works really hard with putting quality packages
together to bring to his country and spread the goodwill of bluegrass music. I worked with a number of quality
Japanese bands, (Longing For The Southland, The Peach Boys) and a number of seasoned musicians in each city.
One of the exciting opportunities was to work with Professor Taisuke Nihigauchi and his University students in Kobe.
The Students ages very from 19-to-21 years of age and I had the opportunity to speak to them on the history
of bluegrass music and work with them with there instruments of choice, Mandolin, Guitar, Bass, Dobro, fiddle
etc. I taught them some of my songs such as Monrosine, Follow Me Back To The Fold, Cold Sheets Of Rain
and Hillbilly Hemingway. We all jammed at the end. Also, met one of the great instrument makers (Guitar,
Mandolin) Yoichi Ueda of Wade Instruments. Website: www.wadeguitars.com.
The shows where well attended and supported. Bluegrass Music is in good hands in Japan. What a great
cultural exchange. Below is a you tube link on one of my performances in Osaka at a venue called ANOTHER
DREAM in OSAKA. I'm performing Follow Me Back To The Fold with the talented women musicians and singers.
Thanks,
Mark Newton
