No Boundaries Review
Back to Press Releases
Mark Newton is an established veteran in Bluegrass. He was a founding member of the influential Virginia Squires, worked with banjo legend Bill Emerson, and has released several solo albums including one that won the IBMA’s Recorded Event Of The Year in 2001. The Mark Newton Band debuted on record with 2001’s Charlie Lawson’s Still, the title track of which spent 8 months on the Bluegrass Unlimited magazine’s song chart. June of 2003 sees the release of the band’s second album. No Boundaries features songs from Tom T. and Dixie Hall, Jimmy Martin, Tim O’Brien, Randall Hylton, Billy Smith and Becky Buller, as well as a couple from band members Mike Munford and Troy Engle.
“Blues For Breakfast,” the leadoff track written by Tom T. & Dixie Hall and Billy Smith, visits the familiar theme of lost love while Becky Buller’s “Cabin In The Trees” recalls another familiar Bluegrass theme of a lost loved one. The Hall and Smith penned “A Beautiful Home,” a highlight of the album, draws us to the singer’s childhood home which is now in ruins, but is still a ‘beautiful home’ where the singer ‘finds peace of mind’ and his ‘heart is at ease.’ Another highlight of the recording, “Cindy,” shows the band’s respect for tradition as they burn their way through the hot number. Other top spots include “Train ON The Island,” a Tim O’Brien song never recorded before now; “Linedrive,” a banjo tune from band member Mike Munford; and “Railroad Dollar” with tremendous lead vocals from bass player Bob Goff, Jr. With Mark’s expressive singing, Troy Engle’s musical craftsmanship on both mandolin & fiddle, Mike Munford’s accomplished banjo style, Bob’s solid bass foundation, and the band’s tight harmony singing, the Mark Newton Band should be considered one of the top acts in the Bluegrass world. This new CD is fine testament to that.
In closing, No Boundaries reveals a Bluegrass band at its very finest, with perfect timing, perfect song selection, perfect singing and playing, and… well… it’s just perfect!
